Equation of an ellipse using its foci and a point on the ellipse

Top  Previous  Next

This wizard is used to find the equation of an ellipse, given its foci and one point on the ellipse.

It can be accessed by clicking on Wizard Button | Ellipse | Equation of an ellipse using its foci and a point on the ellipse.

To find the equation of an ellipse:

  • Enter the foci: either { (x1,y1) , (x1,y2) } or { (x1,y1) , (x2,y1) }.
  • Enter the point: (x3,y3).
  • Click on the "Solve Step" button to see the next step or "Solve all" button to see all steps.

hint2 Note that either the x or y coordinate points of the foci must be equivalent; otherwise the given points will not form the ellipse. Note also that the foci points must be differ from each other.

hint2 If you need an explanation for any particular step, click on the step and then click on the "Explain" button.
